Jamaal Walton ’07 likes challenges and has always been a goal-setter – and an achiever. From his first visit to Lexington, he recognized that the Institute would provide him with a challenging environment and many opportunities. As a cadet, he hit numerous milestones and made plans for his future.

“I was trying to think not for four years, but for 40 years, for 45, for 50 years,” Walton said. With that mindset, he took advantage of a graduate school partnership between the Institute and Florida State University – and earned a master’s degree in integrated marketing and communications. Since then, he’s worked in many college athletic departments. Right now, Walton handles external operations for the College of Charleston’s athletic department. In that job, he works with many different offices to tell the college’s story.

At VMI, Walton balanced many aspects of cadet life: He was a co-captain of the football team, and president of his class. The early experience in successfully juggling different areas makes his life “smoother now,” and his VMI experiences translate to his professional life – and success.

“I’ve been able to reach a lot of milestones because VMI has helped me,” Walton said. “I know I’m in a position to give back; why would I not?”
