The Institute Society was established in 1973 by the trustees of the VMI Foundation in order to recognize and honor those donors who have demonstrated their enthusiasm for and loyalty to VMI through extraordinary annual support, particularly gifts to the Foundation Fund (unrestricted).

This generosity has done much to ensure the Institute’s academic and co-curricular programs remain strong and place VMI in the front rank of American higher education.

Annually, since 2005, the Washington Arch Society has recognized donors who have made commitments to the Institute’s future through the means of a planned gift, such as a bequest or charitable remainder trust. Such commitments are highly valued because they represent the means by which a bright future for the Institute will be realized.
