Competing at Goodall Pool inside the VMI Aquatic Center, VMI’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams delivered a record-setting, history-making 4 days at the 2026 America East Championships. The men finished fourth overall with 309 points entering the final day and ultimately secured five medals, while the women shattered program records and posted their highest point total in the America East era.

Men: Relays Lead the Way to Fourth-Place Finish

The Keydet men established their presence immediately on day one, earning bronze in the 200 medley relay. Matthew Picard ’27, Ian Lutz ’29, Sam Castle ’27, and Layne Tucker ’27 combined for a team-record 1:29.05, edging the field by five one-hundredths of a second to claim VMI’s first medal of the meet.

Momentum continued into day two as the 200 free relay squad of Lutz, Jack Mills ’28, Castle, and Picard raced to another bronze in a record-breaking 1:20.73. Individually, Lutz set the tone in the 50 free prelims with a 20.01—the second-fastest mark in the field and a new rat and team record—before finishing sixth in the A-final (20.13). Picard added an eighth-place finish (20.48), while Joshua Wolf ’28 and Castle scored valuable points in the B-final.

Day three proved historic. Lutz rewrote the record book in the 100 fly, setting a new rat and team record in prelims (48.06) before lowering it again in finals (47.71) to claim bronze. He also swam on the silver-medal 400 medley relay with Picard, Castle, and Tucker. Their 3:15.30 shattered another team record and marked the trio’s third relay medal of the meet.

In the pool, Tucker delivered a fifth-place finish in the 100 breast (55.06), while Castle added a fifth-place showing in the 100 back (49.22). Mills led the 200 free contingent with a seventh-place finish (1:38.77), and Wolf won the B-final for ninth overall.

On the boards, Lane Jones ’26 recorded the highest finish by a VMI male diver in the America East era, placing fourth in the 1-meter with 263.55 points—a milestone performance for the program.

The championship concluded with another podium moment as the 400 free relay team of Mills, Picard, Castle, and Lutz captured bronze in 2:58.37. Lutz left the meet with five medals, while Castle and Picard earned four apiece. Mills secured two.

VMI finished fourth overall, continuing its upward trajectory in the conference as UMBC captured the team title with 805.5 points.

The Keydet women matched the men’s energy from the outset, opening the championship with a pair of relay records. The 200 medley relay team of Noelle Tong ’26, Parker Belle Fogle ’28, Emerson Cosner ’28, and Mackenzie Byrne ’28 clocked 1:48.32 to set a new team standard. Later, the 800 free relay quartet of Lacy Delzell ’29, Avery Shuping ’29, Susan Cushman ’29, and Maddie Wolfe ’29 broke both rat and team records in 7:54.87.

In diving, Isabelle Haer ’28 placed 10th in the 1-meter with 213.45 points, marking her second consecutive top-10 finish at the championships.

Day three saw additional progress. Cosner swam a season-best 58.37 in the 100 fly prelims—the fastest mark by a Keydet this season—before finishing 19th in finals. Fogle reached the 100 breast C-final and placed 18th. The 400 medley relay team of Tong, Byrne, Fogle, and Cosner broke another team record with a 3:58.24 performance.

The final day brought a flurry of historic swims. Shuping delivered one of the meet’s standout performances in the 1,650 free, finishing 11th while breaking four records in one race. Her 17:26.03 set new rat and team records in the mile and included split times that reset both the 1,000 free rat and team marks.

In the 100 free, Tong (13th, 51.99), and Byrne (15th, 52.89) both scored—marking the first time in program history that two VMI women placed in the same event at the conference championship.

Cosner capped the meet by shattering the 200 fly team record with a 12th-place B-Final finish in 2:09.80.

VMI’s women totaled 159 points—the most in the program’s America East era—surpassing last season’s 4-day total and demonstrating measurable growth across every discipline. Bryant claimed the women’s team championship with 775 points.
