SoCon Recognizes Four Track and Field Keydets

The Southern Conference recently recognized Isaiah Blount ’25, Liam McBride ’24, and Keyandre Midgett ’24 Feb. 6, 2024, and Rafe Clendenin ’27 the week of Jan. 31.

Blount and McBride have been named the Southern Conference Male Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their performances in the VMI Winter Relays at the Corps Physical Training Facility Feb. 2–3, 2024.

McBride received the honor on the track side, while Blount earned the award for the field events. The honors mark the second week in a row VMI has been honored, as Rafe Clendenin ’27 was named male field athlete of the week Jan. 31, and Keyandre Midgett ’24, jumper, was named the SoCon Male Field Athlete of the Month for January Feb. 6.

Samford University’s Amiel Dabney and Wofford College’s Olivia Bagg claimed the women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively.

McBride competed at the Doc Hale Invitational at Virginia Tech, where he reset the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.97, resetting his own record time for a third weekend in a row. McBride is now ranked third in the conference for the event.

Competing at the VMI Winter Relays, Blount won the heptathlon with a personal-best score of 4988. Blount, of Milford, Virginia, set new personal records in the pole vault, 60-meter dash, and long jump on his way to a second-place rank in the conference.

The weekly awards are the first career indoor honors for all four weekly winners.

Midgett SoCon Male Field Athlete of Month

After a tremendous opening month of the 2024 indoor season, Keyandre Midgett ’24 was named the Southern Conference Male Field Athlete of the Month Feb. 6 for the month of January.

The Portsmouth, Virginia, native finished first in the triple jump at 15.22 meters at the VMI Team Challenge Jan. 20, followed by a third-place long jump of 7.11 meters at the VMI Invitational Jan. 27.

He currently leads the conference in both the triple jump and long jump for his distances.
