Update 19 March 2020

These are unprecedented times for our nation and our beloved community. The uncertainty and unpredictability of this global pandemic creates a worldwide challenge unlike anything most of us have ever experienced. Yet in a recent communication from Gen. Peay ’62 to the community on post, he mentioned that no community is better suited to overcome adversity than are we.

With that in mind, please allow me to echo the sentiments of our national leaders and the medical experts by encouraging all of us to wash our hands, avoid crowds, hunker down as able and lean on tried and true VMI brother rats and the broader VMI community.

The networks upon which we rely in ordinary circumstances are the same upon which we rely today – maybe more so. Are we willing/able to take proper care of ourselves and resolve to be as helpful as possible to those in need? I believe we can and will, because the same VMI mission that produces educated and honorable difference-makers in times of peril and in times of tranquility is intact. Given this, can we help you connect with local alumni or a brother rat?

Your VMI Alumni Agencies staff is working remotely, and we are open for business. While events and travel are suspended, we are determined to continue our important work by phone, letter and digital communications. The Corps of Cadets is doing likewise, as unprecedented distance learning begins for them March 25. A summary of VMI’s course of action can be found at www.vmi.edu/covid. Please refer to our web page here for alumni related announcements. Both are refreshed daily at 4:00 p.m.

Let us know if hardship comes to you or befalls another member of the VMI family. Perhaps we can help identify available resources and find the assistance you/they need.

We will get through this difficult time together. We will learn from this experience, and armed with those lessons learned, we will be better positioned to support VMI, the Corps of Cadets and our alumni.

Update 11 March 2020

The VMI Alumni Agencies will act in full accordance with any decisions that the Institute may make in regard to access to post and other issues.
