For the 2026 election cycle of the VMI Alumni Association Board of Directors, the board is seeking applications from all members of the Alumni Association who desire to serve on the board. Members of the Alumni Association in good standing are eligible to apply. The applications will be evaluated by the board’s Nominating Committee, which will select nominees to fill projected vacancies for regional directors and directors at large. The Nominating Committee will review all application packages and nominate the most qualified applicant for each vacancy. The nominations will be considered by the membership of the Alumni Association at the VMI Alumni Association Annual Membership Meeting, and the nominees in each category will be voted by the membership for selection. Elected board members will take office July 1, 2026.
While all members of the Alumni Association board have a fiduciary duty to the Alumni Association as a whole, there are two general categories of directors. Directors at large support the Alumni Association without regard to any geographic region. Regional directors have the additional responsibility of supporting active and engaged chapters in their regions.
Board member responsibilities include advising on alumni engagement opportunities, representing the alumni body, attending the VMI Alumni Association board’s regularly scheduled meetings (two in-person in Lexington and two virtual), serving on committees that support VMI and its alumni, and participating in events and programs (chapter socials, new cadet recruiting, rat send-offs, career networking, etc.) in their geographical area. The term of office for a board member is 3 years. Members are eligible to serve a second consecutive term. A typical workload for board members equates to about 5–8 hours per month, depending on the role. Serving as a VMI Alumni Association board director is an unpaid position. Board members are responsible for their own travel expenses. Consideration for nominations will be given to diverse class years, geographical representation, personal and professional attributes, and a history of support of VMI.
A regional director must live in the region he or she was elected to represent for the duration of their term. The primary role of regional directors is to ensure the general alumni body is represented on the Board of Directors and to support regional initiatives and chapter presidents.
The directors at large shall work to represent the alumni body without regard to geographical location or consideration and should seek to understand the opinion of the majority of the alumni or the general point of view of the alumni on a particular issue.
Interested members should submit their completed application packages, including letters of recommendation, by the application deadline of 5 p.m. EST Dec. 15, 2025.
The Nominating Committee will evaluate candidates based on their demonstrated ability to govern with vision, to think strategically, and to have an understanding of their duty and commitment to govern in the best interests of the Alumni Association’s membership. The committee will also ensure the board includes senior and young alumni, and considers veteran status, gender, and racial and ethnic diversity.
