What VMI Delivers

We believe that we are the best in the business, and the data backs us up:

• VMI produces more U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps officers than any other ROTC unit, second only to West Point and Annapolis, respectively.
• VMI officers have a higher military career retention rate than all senior military colleges combined—including the U.S. Military Academy.
• VMI has produced more flag officers than any ROTC program in the country.
• Joint Force Fluency: VMI is one of the only institutions in the nation—and the only senior military college consistently documented—to offer ROTC in five U.S. military services: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force.
• VMI is the only Senior Military College requiring eight semesters of ROTC, giving cadets a competitive leadership advantage in branch and job selection.
• In the VMI Class of 2026:
  • VMI Army: 96% received one of their top three branch preferences. Within the Army military occupational specialties, the highest rates of first-choice placement were in flight, nuclear, and logistics.
  • VMI Air Force: 78% received their first choice officer job; 100% received one of their top two choices.
  • VMI Navy: 80% received their first choice; 93.5% received one of their top two choices.

What CTD Cadets Bring to the Corps

• CTD cadets arrive already conditioned by aspriation and service. They embrace expectations—appearance, bearing, punctuality—and raise the expectations of the stoop. Excellence spreads.
• Having already met academic performance levels as ROTC scholarship recipients, these are the cadets who can lead in the classroom and on the hill. They seem to welcome stress as fuel and structure as freedom. They realize the importance of meeting and exceeding physical fitness guidelines, and they are committed to physical training. Their example normalizes the expectation, lifting results for teams, clubs, and companies.
• Many VMI commissioning officers tend to make the military their careers; therefore, more alumni as officers contribute to a more robust and experienced alumni network in service.
