A federally-funded ROTC scholarship pays tuition, or the majority of the cost, for both in- and out-of-state cadets. So, the $15,000 CTD Scholarship for a Virginian is roughly a 1:1 match of the federal ROTC scholarship, and 3:1 (nearly $50,000) match for those from all other states.
The number to fully endow the program is a big one, and we will not likely get there overnight. While we build it, VMI needs donors to make current gifts to either partially or fully fund annual Call to Duty Scholarships today. An individual scholarship is $15,000, whether reached by a single donor or by several donors whose gifts are bundled together. Pledges are encouraged. To fund a single cadet throughout their cadetship, a commitment of $60,000 over 4 years is especially impactful.
The initial aspiration is to fund no fewer than 100 cadets on each barracks stoop—approximately 400 cadets overall. When they elect to utilize their competitively earned ROTC scholarship towards their VMI education and training, they will be met with a Call to Duty Scholarship. An endowment approximating $350,000 generates a $15,000 scholarship for a single cadet in perpetuity. An endowment of some $140 million endows the program for 400 cadets.
