The Southern Conference announced its weekly football honors Sept. 4, 2023, as VMI’s Alex Oliver ’24 earned SoCon Defensive Player of the Week after helping lift the Keydets to a 12-7 season-opening win against Davidson.

An All-SoCon First Team cornerback (2022), Oliver was all over the field against the Wildcats, totaling 6.0 tackles, including 0.5 tackles for loss (one yard). It was Oliver’s late-game performance that stood the tallest, as the senior from Mechanicsville, Virginia, intercepted a pass with eight seconds remaining that sealed the win for the Keydets.

In the process, Oliver and company helped limit one of 2022’s top offenses to just 184 total yards. Oliver, who led VMI in interceptions (three) and passes defended (13) last season, currently ranks second in all of FCS (23rd in all NCAA Football) with 27 career passes defended.
