Rogers ’26 Named MAAC Faceoff Specialist of the Week, USILA Team

For the second week in a row, Jack Rogers ’26 was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Faceoff Player of the Week for his efforts against Detroit Mercy March 2. Rogers was also recognized by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association for his accomplishments against the Titans March 2.

The Suwanee, Georgia, native continued his hot streak with another dominating performance in VMI’s 15-10 win over Detroit Mercy. Rogers took all 29 of VMI’s faceoff attempts, winning 22 of them for a winning percentage of 75.9 percent.

He also contributed 10 ground balls on the day, securing consistent possessions for the Keydets, who improved to 4-2 on the year with the win, their best start since the 2000 season.

Rogers Named to USILA Team of the Week

After an excellent showing last weekend against Detroit Mercy, Rogers was also recognized by the USILA for his accomplishments against the Titans.

The honor marks the second week in a row that a VMI Keydet has received the accolade, as Charles Hunt ’25 was named to the list last week.

Rogers took all 29 reps and finished with 22 wins at the X for a .758 percentage in a 15-10 victory over Detroit Mercy last weekend in a neutral site game in Columbus, Ohio. Two of his faceoff wins led to goals in transition. VMI winning the possession battle ultimately led to the win as the Keydets pulled away from the Titans in the second half.

Below is a synopsis of each athlete named to the USILA Team of the Week for all games played last week:

March 5, 2024, USILA Team of the Week

A.J. Pilate, Defense, Massapequa, N.Y., Junior, Army West Point
Pilate held his both of his matchups on the week without a goal, including Syracuse’s Joey Spallina. He also scored his first career goal against Lafayette.

Coulter Mackesy, Attack, Bronxville, N.Y., Junior, Princeton
Mackesy had five goals and two assists in a 15-9 win over North Carolina. He followed that performance with two goals and two assists against Duke.

Matt Collison, Midfield, Scarborough, Ontario, Sophomore, Johns Hopkins
Collison contributed a career-high five points on four goals and one assist to help propel Johns Hopkins to a 16-14 win versus No. 2 Virginia. His four goals also represented a career best.

Brendan Lavelle, Defense, Rye, N.Y., Senior, Penn
Lavelle held reigning Tewaaraton Award winner Brennan O’Neill to just one goal in Penn’s 14-12 upset victory over Duke. He totaled six ground balls and two caused turnovers against the Blue Devils. He added five ground balls and two caused turnovers versus North Carolina.

T.J. Malone, Attack, West Chester, Pa., Grad., Penn State
Malone tallied a career-high nine points in a 15-14 overtime win against No. 9/10 Yale. He scored four goals in the final 30 minutes to propel the Nittany Lions to a comeback victory.

Jack Fracyon, Goalkeeper, Annapolis, Md., Junior, Penn State
Fracyon stopped 17 shots and had a .548 save percentage against Yale. He allowed just one goal in the fourth quarter to help send the game into overtime and logged one save during the extra period.

C.J. Kirst, Attack, Bernardsville, N.J., Senior, Cornell
Kirst tallied 13 points in two games against Hobart and Ohio State. He tied his career-high with seven goals against the Buckeyes and added one assist. He did not give up a turnover in either outing and caused three on the ride.

Zach Hayashi, Faceoff specialist, North Potomac, Md., Freshman, Navy
Hayashi won a career-high 19 of 17 faceoff attempts for a .704 percentage in a 16-9 win against Boston University. His 19 wins at the X marks the sixth most in program history and the 29 attempts tied for fourth. He added a personal-best 10 ground balls.

Devon McLane, Midfield, Westfield, N.J., Grad., Notre Dame
McLane posted six points on three goals and three assists in a 14-9 win over Maryland. His six points were a season-high and the most the Terrapins have allowed to a single opposing player this season.
