Mousaw ’24 takes Third at SoCon Championship

Freshman Tyler Mousaw ’24 finished third in his weight class to pace the VMI wrestling team Feb. 28 at the 2021 Southern Conference Wrestling Championships, hosted by Appalachian State University at the Holmes Convocation Center.

The young Keydet contingent was comprised of four freshmen, five sophomores, and one senior and finished sixth in the team scoring with 18 points. Mousaw won two of his three matches Sunday at 197 pounds. He pinned his Appalachian State foe in 3:38 in the consolation semifinals and also pinned his opponent from The Citadel in the third-place match in 3:53.

Freshman Blake Showers ’24 won by pin in the quarterfinals at 157 pounds, as did freshman Freddy Junko ’24 at 141. Sophomore Jon Hoover ’23 earned a major decision victory in the consolation round at 165. Sophomore Job Chishko ’23 won a match at 149 pounds, as did sophomore Ethan Carpenter ’23 at 174 pounds and sophomore Zach Brown ’23 at 184 pounds. Freshman Giomar Ramos ’24 outlasted his Presbyterian opponent by tiebreaker at 285 pounds.

Mousaw and other Keydets will wait for potential at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament.
