Throughout the year, nearly 100 VMI alumni chapters gather in celebration, hosting events that honor the spirit, sacrifice, and shared legacy of the Corps. Signature traditions such as Founders Day, Dark Ages, New Market Day, and rat send-offs offer moments of reflection and connection. As cold weather settles in and cadets shift to winter uniforms, Dark Ages deepens the quiet strength that defines the Corps. Founders Day commemorates the birth of the Institute and the enduring vision of 1839. New Market Day stirs reverence for the 257 cadets who marched into battle, embodying courage and unity. Rat send-offs give alumni the chance to welcome incoming cadets and their families, providing them with a source of support as they prepare to matriculate. These events are more than dates on a calendar—they are living expressions of the brother rat bond that makes VMI truly unique.
Founders Day marks the establishment of Virginia Military Institute and celebrates the vision, leadership, and enduring values that have shaped the Institute since its founding in 1839. It’s a day to honor the legacy of those who built VMI and the principles of honor, integrity, service, and leadership that continue to guide the Corps today.
We encourage VMI alumni chapters to plan Founders Day celebrations that reflect the pride and tradition of the Institute. These events are a meaningful way to connect with fellow alumni, share the VMI spirit, and inspire future generations through the values that unite us all.
As the days grow shorter and the air turns colder, cadets at Virginia Military Institute enter the traditional “Dark Ages”—a period that builds grit, discipline, and unity. This season is marked by the shift to winter class dyke uniforms and a deepening of the enduring spirit that defines the Corps.
VMI alumni chapters are invited to begin planning their annual Dark Ages events, ideally scheduled between December and March. These gatherings honor the resilience of cadet life and celebrate the traditions that unite us across generations. Let’s come together to support our cadets and keep the spirit of VMI strong through the darkest days of the year.

New Market Day is a proud and powerful tradition at VMI, celebrating the courage and sacrifice of the 257 cadets who marched into battle on May 15, 1864, and honoring those who gave their lives in service. It’s a day that reflects the enduring values of duty, honor, and sacrifice that define the Institute.
VMI Alumni Chapters are encouraged to begin planning New Market Day celebrations that bring our community together in remembrance, pride, and a way to honor all who have died on the field of honor. These events are a meaningful way to honor the legacy of the Corps and the value of service to all future generations with the spirit of VMI.
Each year, dozens of alumni chapters across the country organize rat send-off events. These events, organized through the VMI Alumni Association by dedicated volunteer leaders, serve as a way to welcome incoming rats to the VMI family. They also function as a casual way for alumni to meet the next generation of citizen-soldiers and offer guidance and support as they embark on this important chapter of their lives.
