Call For Nominations - VMI Distinguished Coaching Award
3/29/2012

Nominations for the VMI Distinguished Coaching Award are solicited.  Please submit nominations by the Close of Business on Monday, 23 April 2012.

Any head coach or assistant coach who is coaching in VMI's intercollegiate athletic program or coaching a club sport athletic team at VMI is eligible.

Criteria for Nomination and Selection:  A precept of athletics at VMI is that every interested cadet is welcome as a candidate for the team of any sport.  Moreover, although a successful win/loss record is highly desirable, valued and very worthy of recognition and acclaim, at VMI the precept is that winning is not a tolerable alternative to impeccable honor, moral ethics, proficient academics, acceptance of the student government, military and new cadet systems, good sportsmanship, wholesome competition, and the enjoyment of the sport by the participants.

Below is a link to the form to submit a nomination.  Within the form, submit justification for the nomination.  Your statement should give special consideration to such qualities as the nominee's: integrity, character, ethics, expertise, enthusiasm and dedication to the aforesaid precepts; fairness in evaluating candidates for the members of the team; propensity to encourage team members to strive for overall excellence through maximum achievement as students and complete participation in all aspects of barracks life, student government , and the military  and new cadet systems; ability to develop, teach, condition, train, prepare and inspire team members to put forth their best efforts unselfishly as a team acting as good sportsmen who epitomize the fighting, never-say-die "Sprit of VMI"; cooperation with the coaches of other sports in accommodating those athletes interested in and capable of multi-sport participation; and, contributions toward the improvement of the overall athletic climate at VMI and its reputation for excellence.

It is expected that emphasis will be placed on coaching performance in the traditional practice and playing settings.  However, the nominee's efficacy in seeking, finding, recruiting, counseling, and keeping quality student athletes who graduate may be considered.  Other aspects of the stewardship responsibilities of coaching and the accomplishments of present and former team members attributable to the notable influence of the nominee may likewise be considered.  Nominations should also consider the degree to which the nominee stands unique and distinguished in the eyes of the VMI Corps of Cadets, Faculty, Staff, and Alumni.

Remembering Howie Cook '01

The Class of 2001 mourns the tragic and untimely death of our Brother Rat, Howie Cook.  Howie was a decorated Iraq veteran, having served as a Marine during and after his cadetship at VMI.  At the time of his death, Howie was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan as a Blackhawk pilot and honor graduate from flight school.  Howie will be always remembered for his famously irresistible sense of humor.  But his loyal, reliable, and generous friendship was truly unmatched - most evident when when he traveled from Texas in May to help us bury our Brother Rat, Charles Ransom. Howie was an unforgettable man and the light of his spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.  Please join us our prayers for his family, especially his wife Shelly.  This was an unforgettable man.
