The VMI Foundation

Mission

Beginning its work in 1937, the VMI Foundation, a private, non-profit corporation, annually raises millions of dollars in gifts and commitments from VMI’s alumni, parents, and friends as well as manages hundreds of millions of dollars in endowments that support myriad activities on Post.

The private financial support that the VMI Foundation provides annually to VMI is essential to the maintenance and advancement of the Institute’s academic and co-curricular programs. The VMI Foundation also supports capital improvements at the Institute in order that VMI’s faculty and staff have the high-quality facilities necessary to give cadets the academic knowledge and experience in leadership they will need to become leaders in their professions and active citizens in their communities and in the country.  Foundation-managed endowments annually provide millions of dollars in financial aid to cadets. All told, the VMI Foundation will provide more than $12.3 million in direct aid to the Institute and its faculty, staff, and cadets in the current academic year

Means

The volunteer leaders, officers, and staff of the VMI Foundation execute their shared mission through a combination of:

  • Energetic fundraising: Engaging the entire VMI Family—alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff—educating them as to the Instiute's needs, and motivating them to make gifts and commitments to VMI.
  • Diligent stewardship: Ensuring that donors receive proper recognition for their generosity and proper respect for their privacy, that all gifts and commitments are directed according to the donors’ wishes, and that all operations are conducted on a strong ethical basis.
  • Prudent investment: Choosing the proper investment vehicles in order to create maximum income for VMI while safeguarding endowments in order to ensure long-term financial stability.
  • Dedication to mission: Committing wholeheartedly to the welfare and advancement of the Virginia Military Institute and its Corps of Cadets.
